James Maxwell (1831-1879) was a Scottish mathematician and theoretical physicist. He demonstrated that electric and magnetic fields travel through space in the form of waves and at the constant speed of light. Maxwell's equations are four equations that describe the relationship between electric field, magnetic field, electric charge, and electric current. He also developed the Maxwell distribution that is a statistical means used to describe the kinetic theory of gases. In 1861 he created the first true color photograph. Many scientists consider his contributions to physics to be of the same magnitude as those of Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.
