Satire can be a very entertaining vehicle to entice a reader to enjoy literature. The fifth grade reading classes are just getting started on a fascinating journey into a world created by Miguel de Cervantes of Spain. Don Quixote, although a challenging read, should hopefully enrich the students' appreciation of the power of reading.
Each class is being read to for the first 8-10 minutes from an age appropriate novel. The students typically wish for me to continue with the stories, however that is the power of suspense that the authors have created and one the students seem to appreciate. The main focus of each class is the content of the main story. Class discussion is always welcome and new vocabulary is always discussed with an attempt to make the word relevant to the students' world. Most days, I make an effort to watch the class time and stop with 8 minutes left to allow the students to free read.
